Why Some Port St. Lucie Homes Need More Than Standard Locks
Your neighbor has a Schlage deadbolt from Home Depot. Costs $40. Works fine for them.
But maybe you're not them.
Maybe you've got a home worth $800,000. Or jewelry you inherited. Or firearms you need to protect. Or you're a public figure who doesn't want your address to be an easy target.
Maybe you just want to sleep better knowing that anyone trying to break in is going to have a very bad time.
That's when you call us about high-security locks.
We've been installing Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and ASSA locks across Port St. Lucie since 2009. Waterfront homes in St. Lucie West. Executives in Tradition. Jewelry stores. Medical offices. Anywhere that needs serious protection.

What Makes a Lock "High-Security"?
Marketing departments love that phrase. They slap "high-security" on anything.
But real high-security means UL 437 certification. That's a standard set by Underwriters Laboratories. To earn it, a lock has to pass brutal testing:
Pick resistance. Expert lockpickers try to defeat it for 5+ minutes. If they succeed, it fails.
Drill resistance. They attack it with hardened drill bits. The lock has to resist long enough that a burglar would give up.
Physical attack resistance. Prying. Wrenching. Sawing. Hammering. The lock has to survive all of it.
Key control. The keys can't be duplicated without authorization. Ever.
If a lock can't pass all of those tests, it doesn't get UL 437 certification. And we don't call it high-security.
The High-Security Locks We Install
Medeco - The Gold Standard
When people think "unpickable lock," they're thinking Medeco.
These locks use rotating pins with sidebar technology. You can't pick them with standard tools. Even experts struggle.
The keys are patented. Angled cuts. Sidebar notches. Rotation codes. You can't copy them at a hardware store. You can't even copy them at most locksmith shops without presenting your security card.
We've installed Medeco in Port St. Lucie homes worth $2 million+. Medical offices with controlled substances. Jewelry stores. Places where security actually matters.
Best for: Maximum security. When you need the absolute best.
Cost installed: $350-$550 per cylinder.
Mul-T-Lock - Military-Grade Protection
Israeli military uses these. That tells you something.
They use telescopic pin technology. Multiple pin chambers. Millions of possible combinations. And the pins have to both lift AND rotate to unlock.
Try to drill it? Hardened steel balls destroy your drill bit.
Try to pick it? Good luck. The mechanism is completely different from standard locks.
Best for: High-value commercial properties. Executives who've been targeted before.
Cost installed: $400-$650 per cylinder.
ASSA ABLOY - Swedish Engineering
These use rotating disk technology instead of pin tumblers. Completely different mechanism from standard locks.
That means all the standard picking techniques don't work. Burglars trained on pin tumbler locks are useless against these.
They also offer electronic key management systems. You can program keys remotely. Deactivate lost keys instantly. Track who used which key when.
Best for: Commercial buildings with multiple entry points. Property managers.
Cost installed: $350-$600 per cylinder.
Schlage Primus - American Quality
Schlage's high-security line. Dual locking system — pin tumbler plus sidebar.
Not quite as pick-resistant as Medeco or Mul-T-Lock. But still UL 437 certified. And more affordable.
Keys are restricted. The Primus keyway is patented. You need authorization to get copies made.
Best for: Budget-conscious high-security. Master key systems for businesses.
Cost installed: $250-$450 per cylinder.
Who Actually Needs High-Security Locks?
Let's be honest. Most people don't.
If you live in a typical Port St. Lucie neighborhood, a good Grade 1 Schlage or Kwikset deadbolt is fine. Burglars aren't lock-picking specialists. They're kicking in doors or smashing windows.
But you might need high-security locks if:
Your Home Is High-Value
$500,000+ waterfront home in St. Lucie West? Burglars know there's stuff worth stealing inside.
High-security locks send a message: this house isn't easy. Try somewhere else.
You Have Specific Valuables
Jewelry collection. Art. Firearms. Cash. Precious metals.
Things insurance might not fully cover. Things you can't replace.
You're a Public Figure
Local business owner. Doctor. Lawyer. Someone whose address is semi-public.
You face different risks. High-security locks with restricted keys mean employees can't make copies. Ex-employees can't come back.
You've Been Targeted Before
Someone broke in once. Or tried to. Or you've got a stalker. Or a bad divorce situation.
Standard locks won't cut it anymore. You need something serious.
Your Business Handles Sensitive Material
Medical records. Legal files. Controlled substances. High-value inventory.
Some industries require high-security locks by regulation. Even if they don't, you should have them anyway.
The Key Control Advantage
This is the feature people don't think about until they need it.
With standard locks, anyone can copy your keys. Your contractor. Your cleaning service. Your kids. Your ex.
With high-security locks, key duplication requires:
Your security card. Looks like a credit card. Has your authorization code. Without it, no copies.
An authorized dealer. Only specific locksmiths can cut these keys. Hardware stores can't do it.
Photo ID. Your name has to match the security card.
This means you control exactly who has keys to your property. Forever.
Real Installations We've Done
The Waterfront Home in St. Lucie West
$1.2 million house. Canal-front. Beautiful. Also visible from the water and easy to watch.
Owners wanted maximum security without turning their home into a fortress. We installed Medeco deadbolts on all exterior doors. Reinforced strike plates. High-security window locks.
Cost: $2,400 for the whole house. They sleep better. So would you.
The Medical Office in Port St. Lucie
Pain management clinic. DEA regulations require serious security for controlled substances.
We installed Mul-T-Lock on all exterior doors and the medication room. Restricted keyway. Every key tracked and registered.
When an employee left, they returned their key. We marked it deactivated. No rekeying needed.
The Executive in Tradition
Business owner. High net worth. Someone tried to break in while he was on vacation.
They tried to drill his deadbolt. Failed. Left marks but didn't get in. Standard deadbolt probably would've been defeated.
He called us when he got back. We upgraded everything to Medeco. Added door reinforcement. Now he travels without worrying.
High-Security vs. Standard Locks: The Real Difference
Standard Grade 1 Deadbolt
Cost: $50-$150 installed
Pick time: 30 seconds to 5 minutes for someone with basic skills
Drill time: 10-30 seconds with a decent drill
Key control: None. Copy at any hardware store.
Best for: Most homes. Average risk situations.
UL 437 High-Security Lock
Cost: $250-$650 installed
Pick time: 5+ minutes for experts. Nearly impossible for average burglars.
Drill time: Several minutes with specialized equipment. Most give up.
Key control: Restricted. Can't copy without authorization.
Best for: High-value properties. Specific threats. Peace of mind.
Don't Forget Door Reinforcement
Here's an uncomfortable truth: the best lock in the world doesn't matter if your door frame is weak.
A burglar doesn't pick your Medeco lock. He kicks in your door. The frame splinters. He's inside in 3 seconds.
When we install high-security locks, we also recommend:
Door reinforcement kits. Steel plates that wrap your frame. Prevents splitting.
3-inch strike plates. Mounted with screws that go all the way into the wall stud.
Security hinges. Non-removable pins. Can't take the door off from outside.
Solid core or steel doors. Hollow core doors can be kicked through. Upgrade the door too.
Cost for complete door reinforcement: $200-$400 per door. Absolutely worth it if you're spending $500 on a lock.
What About Smart Locks?
Good question. Can you get high-security AND smart features?
Sort of. Some smart locks are reasonably secure. August, Schlage Encode, Yale. They're not UL 437 certified, but they're decent.
For maximum security AND smart features, we recommend:
Option 1: High-security deadbolt plus a separate smart lock on the same door. Belt and suspenders approach.
Option 2: Electronic access control system. Keypad entry with restricted access. Commercial-grade. Expensive but very secure.
Smart locks are convenient. High-security locks are secure. You can have both, but it costs more.
How Much Does High-Security Really Cost?
For a typical Port St. Lucie home:
Front door only (most common): $350-$650
Front and back doors: $700-$1,200
All exterior doors (3-4 doors): $1,000-$2,000
Full security overhaul (locks + reinforcement + window security): $2,000-$4,000
For commercial properties, depends entirely on the building. Call us for a quote.
Yes, it's expensive. But one successful burglary costs more. In money, yes. But also in the feeling that your home isn't safe anymore.
